Opera 101
Opera 101 is an intro to opera offered through the JCPS Adult & Continuing Education/Lifelong Learning Program and taught by Kentucky Opera’s Director of Education, Deanna Hoying. Classes begin Saturday, August 29 with the final class on Wednesday, September 23 at the Final Dress Rehearsal of LA TRAVIATA. Classes include information on the season’s operas as well as opera history, terminology, theatre craft and other interdisciplinary information.

Composer Workshop
This collaborative program invites an American opera composer to Louisville to provide coaching and master classes with Kentucky Opera Studio Artists, University of Louisville voice students and students from the Academy of Music at St. Francis in the Fields.
This season we are pleased to feature Ben Moore as our 2009 Composer in Residence. Mr. Moore is an internationally recognized composer whose music has been performed by Deborah Voigt, Susan Graham, Frederica von Stade, Nathan Gunn, Audra McDonald and the late Jerry Hadley.

Chow at the Chao - A new program in 2009
University of Louisville faculty and Kentucky Opera’s Studio Artists present a fun and interactive discussion (with live operatic excerpts) about opera during lunch time in the Chao Auditorium of the U of L Ekstrom Library.
Lunch & Listen
Broadcast live through a partnership with MetroTV and WUOL at the Louisville Public Media studios, you get the unique opportunity to meet main stage artists and Kentucky Opera Studio Artists performing live selections from the upcoming opera production. Sights & Sounds
Partnering with the Speed Art Museum, we tie the opera production into a visual arts style or movement and feature live operatic excerpts performed by Kentucky Opera’s Studio Artists. Hosted by the Speed Art Museum’s Director of Education and Kentucky Opera’s Director of Education, Sights & Sounds also features guest lecturers from around Kentuckiana.

Opera Preview
One hour before curtain, former Kentucky Opera General Director Thomson Smillie and Kentucky Opera’s Director of Education, Deanna Hoying, host pre-performance lectures to broaden your opera experience. You are introduced to the history and structure of the opera, musical themes to listen for and dramatic elements to watch. These lectures are held at the Brown Theatre.
Final Dress Rehearsal Program
This popular program offers students the unique opportunity to attend the final dress rehearsal of a Kentucky Opera production. You may download an education study guide one month prior to each dress rehearsal to prepare your for what you will see on stage. This program is designed for students from third grade through college. All final dress rehearsals take place at the Brown Theatre and begin at 7pm. There is no late seating. Tickets are $5 and are available through the Kentucky Opera Education Department. This program sells out quickly and is only offered to students with valid student ID.

Distance Learning/Internet2 Initiative
Select education programs are available for both students and adults throughout Kentucky via the Internet2 Initiative.
